몽골은 지구 평균기온이 지난 100년간 1.3도 상승하는 동안, 2.45도나 올라 기후위기의 직격탄을 맞은 국가다. 이로 인해 국토의 91%가 사막화 위기에 놓였고, 가축을 잃은 유목민들은 생계를 잃고 ‘기후난민’으로 전락하고 있다.
대한성공회의 기금으로 조성되는 ‘성공회 숲’은 황폐화된 토양을 되살리고, 회복된 땅에서 기후난민들이 영농·양묘 등 수익사업을 통해 경제적 자립을 이룰 수 있도록 돕게 될 것으로 기대된다.
푸른아시아 오기출 상임이사는 “‘성공회 숲’에 심긴 나무가 몽골의 자연과 생명을 회복시키고, 기후난민들의 삶을 지탱하는 든든한 기반이 될 것”이라며 감사를 전했다. 이어 “최근 일본 국왕이 몽골을 국빈 방문해 ‘10억 그루 나무 심기 운동’과 같은 환경 복원 협력 방안에 대해 몽골 대통령과 논의했다”며 “향후 몽골에서 기후위기 적응 사업의 국제적 차원의 협력이 활발히 전개될 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
김장환 주교는 “대한성공회는 정의와 평화, 그리고 창조세계의 보전을 위해 힘써왔다”며 “앞으로 일본성공회 등과 협력해 몽골 ‘성공회 숲’을 확대하고, 기후위기 적응 사업의 국제협력 모델을 만들어 가겠다”고 밝혔다.
대한성공회는 앞으로도 몽골 사막화 지역에 나무를 심어 ‘성공회 숲’을 넓히고, 성직자와 신자들이 직접 현장을 찾아 나무를 심으며 몽골의 생태환경을 체험하는 방문 프로그램을 이어갈 계획이다.
푸른아시아는 기후위기 대응을 위해 조림사업을 통해 공동체 기반의 지속가능한 지역발전 모델을 만들어온 국제기후 NGO로, 2014년 유엔사막화방지협약으로부터 ‘생명의 토지상’ 최고상을 수상한 바 있다.

Green Asia announced in a press release dated September 5th, "On Friday, September 5th, the Anglican Church of Korea donated 40 million won to Green Asia to create an 'Anglican Forest' in a desertification-affected area in Mongolia. The donation ceremony was attended by Bishop Kim Jang-hwan of the Seoul Diocese of the Anglican Church of Korea, Dean of the Academic Affairs Choi Jun-ki, Director of the General Affairs Bureau Na Seong-kwon, and Green Asia Executive Director Oh Gi-chul."
According to the release, the donation will be used to plant trees and restore soil in Bayankhangai Soum, Tuv Province, Mongolia, an area hit by climate change. Last year, the Anglican Church of Korea donated 40 million won in Lenten offerings and has planted 3,000 trees across a 3-hectare site to cultivate the "Anglican Forest."
Mongolia is a country directly impacted by the climate crisis, with the average global temperature rising by 2.45 degrees Celsius, compared to 1.3 degrees Celsius over the past 100 years. As a result, 91% of the country is at risk of desertification, and nomadic herders, who have lost their livestock, are losing their livelihoods and becoming "climate refugees."
The "Anglican Forest," funded by the Anglican Church of Korea, is expected to revitalize degraded soil and help climate refugees achieve economic independence through profitable businesses such as farming and nursery farming on the restored land.
Green Asia Executive Director Ogi-chul expressed his gratitude, saying, “The trees planted in the ‘Anglican Forest’ will restore Mongolia’s nature and life and serve as a solid foundation for supporting the lives of climate refugees.” He added, “During the recent state visit to Mongolia, the Emperor of Japan discussed with the Mongolian President collaborative environmental restoration initiatives, similar to the ‘Plant a Billion Tree Campaign.’” He added, “We anticipate active international cooperation in climate crisis adaptation projects in Mongolia in the future.”
Bishop Kim Jang-hwan stated, “The Anglican Church of Korea has been committed to justice, peace, and the preservation of creation. We will collaborate with the Anglican Church of Japan and others to expand the ‘Anglican Forest’ in Mongolia and establish a model for international cooperation in climate crisis adaptation projects.”
The Anglican Church of Korea plans to continue expanding the ‘Anglican Forest’ by planting trees in desertified areas of Mongolia and to continue programs where clergy and believers can visit sites to plant trees and experience Mongolia’s ecological environment.
Blue Asia is an international climate NGO that has been creating a community-based sustainable regional development model through afforestation projects to respond to the climate crisis. In 2014, it received the highest award, the ‘Land for Life Award’, from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
